Before an outpatient anesthesia, we will conduct a detailed consultation with you. Here we discuss the following:

  • if you are older than 40 or have a serious pre-existing medical condition (e.g. heart attack, stroke, etc.), you should have a preliminary anesthetic examination carried out by your general practitioner.
  • you will be provided an anesthesia questionnaire, which you should read carefully and fill in at home (You should NOT wait until the day of surgery!). Please bring the questionnaire along with your GP's findings, medication list, allergy or anesthesia card (if applicable), and your insurance card on the day of the operation.
  • anesthesia consultations take place by telephone; the responsible anesthesiologist will call you in good time. Even if we have treated you in the past, a consultation will still be necessary, and we will be in touch with you regarding such matters.

  • Please do not eat (including NO sweets, fruit or chewing gum) or smoke for at least 6 hours before the operation!
  • Clear liquids are permitted up to 2 hours before the operation (water, unsweetened tea or black coffee) but NO fruit juices, drinks containing fat or milk.
  • If you regularly take medication, please contact us.
  • Please remove any jewelry, piercings, contact lenses or dentures before the procedure.
  • Please bring any aids you may have (e.g., crutches, etc.) with you. You are also welcome to bring something to drink and eat afterwards.
  • Please be sure to inform us if there is a change in your state of health (e.g., a sore throat, cold, cough, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.)

  • We will discharge you from our care when the after-effects of the anesthetic medicine(s) have largely subsided.
  • Please be sure that a relative or friend can take you home and care for you for an additional 24 hours.
  • You can drink and eat light foods at home without any special consideration.

We dedicate ample time to making anesthesia as pleasant as possible for children. Understanding that children can quickly become anxious in a medical environment, we emphasize introducing anesthesia in a playful way. Using gentle, reassuring words and child-friendly explanations, we create a trusting atmosphere where your child will feel safe.

We pay particular attention to ensuring that parents can accompany their child throughout the entire process. You can be present while anesthesia is being administered to reassure your child until they fall asleep safely. Of course, you will also be by your child's side when they wake up after the procedure to provide them with a sense of security and reassurance. This not only aids in reducing your child's anxiety, but also ensures that the entire anesthesia process is as stress-free as possible.

With our experience in pediatric anesthesia and our empathetic approach, we ensure that you and your child are in the best of hands. Our goal is for your child to perceive anesthesia as a positive, anxiety-free experience, carried out as gently and safely as possible.

You can trust in our profound expertise and empathetic care to ensure the safest anesthesia experience for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

A rare but potentially fatal complication is aspiration, i.e. the inhalation of stomach contents (chyme with stomach acid). Since the protective reflexes (cough reflex, pharyngeal or gag reflex) are absent during general anesthesia, stomach contents can passively flow back through the esophagus and enter the lungs via the trachea. This acidic content may cause lung damage that may even require artificial respiration and intensive medical care.
Since we absolutely want to avoid this risk of aspiration during planned procedures, you must not eat anything for six hours before the operation. Sweets, chewing gum and nicotine are also taboo. However, you can drink clear liquids (water, tea) up to 2 hours before the anesthesia. These rules also apply to children.

All anesthesiologic procedures are considered safe, but there are certain risks and complications. Most side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and numbness, are only temporary. Serious complications, such as heart attack, stroke, or COPD, are often associated with pre-existing conditions. Some diseases may also limit the outpatient procedure.
Your anesthesiologist will clarify all these questions with you in advance during your consultation. Permanent nerve damage is also very rare, as the blocks can now be neutralized using ultrasound guidance. We will inform you in detail of the benefits and risks you may be facing.

„Awareness" or waking during anesthesia is a common fear of patients. The anesthetic medicines are dosed according to body weight and efficacy, but the depth of anesthesia can also be measured by EEG monitoring (e.g. Narcotrend). This monitoring enables a more precise dose adjustment and a more accurate determination of the depth of anesthesia.

Confusion rarely occurs during short, outpatient operations. The elderly, patients with dementia and small children are particularly at risk. This condition is rare and temporary and can also be treated well with medication.
All studies have shown that the choice of anesthetic procedure hardly plays a role. The condition is much more influenced by stress and cardiovascular problems.

MSometimes yes, but often, unfortunately, not. One of the aims of anesthesia is to create optimal working conditions for the surgeon to achieve the best surgical results. Additionally, individual anatomical factors, medications, or pre-existing conditions can play a significant role in the decision-making process. Your anesthesiologist will inform you about this in detail.

Yes, you will feel that something is being done, but you will not feel any pain. The anesthesia often lasts for several hours, and the blockade is mixed: i.e., not only sensation is temporarily lost, but also the active mobility. Your anesthesiologist will accompany you throughout the operation and will be there to help you if you find anything unpleasant.
